It’s indeed very dull and boring work to tag your friends whenever you upload photos to your Facebook profile, especially if you post a lot of photos online. But now you can use Polar Rose, which helps in tagging your friends in photos quickly and more easily. Polar Rose, a company focused on digital content analysis, has launched an application that brings facial recognition to all your Facebook photos.
After creating an account with Polar Rose, it grabs all your Facebook photos via Facebook Connect. Using a state-of-the-art face recognition technology, it marks out the faces in the photos with a small box. Start naming your friends in these square boxes and the site will then shows you possible matches for that person in other photos you have – reject any incorrect matches with a click. Now you have named that person in the other photos they appeared in.

Google Wave, the search engine giant’s real-time collaboration platform, began rolling out to 100,000 new users Sept. 30 as an extended preview. The platform combines e-mail, instant messaging and wiki-like document and file sharing with social networking features. Many of those new users included luminary bloggers such as Harsh Agrawal, and the early reports are rolling in. It’s too early to judge Wave yet, but it’s clear that the HTML 5-based platform has a number of issues that need to be addressed, from missing features to concerns about Wave’s infrastructure. But perhaps the biggest challenges are the learning curves associated with using Wave—it’s quite chaotic—as well as the potential for crashing users’ productivity parties. [click to continue…]

The mobile carriers have in-network calling, and BlackBerry users have BlackBerry Messenger, a BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry instant messenger that works more like e-mail than SMS to send real-time messages through RIM’s servers. On Wednesday, RIM released BlackBerry Messenger 5.0, a version that pads the messenger with “avatars” (but they’re more like your standard social networking mug shots), group chat, and photo sharing.
In addition to sending photos to contacts, BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 now opens the gates for transferring large files–up to 6MB in size. That’s the equivalent of several photos, or one or two songs–maybe a very short video.
